Police in Derry have arrested a male on suspicion of a number of offences following a vehicle-related incident in the city last night, Monday, February 17.

District Support Team officers on patrol just before 10 pm on Westland Street were alerted to a grey Volkswagen Golf being driven on Marlborough Terrace that hit a kerb, which resulted in damaging a tyre on the car.

Police signalled for the driver to stop but they continued on, towards Westland Street. The vehicle subsequently collided with a parked van.

Police observed the male driver make off from the Golf which, as a result of police checks, matched the description of a vehicle reported stolen from the Strand Road area in the city centre.

Officers subsequently located a 19-year-old male, who matched the description of the suspect.

He was arrested on suspicion of offences including aggravated vehicle taking causing damage, using a motor vehicle without insurance, dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, driving when unfit through drink or drug, and failing to stop for police.

Following his arrest, the male spat at an officer and was arrested on suspicion of assault on police.

The man remains in police custody this morning, Tuesday, February 18 while enquiries continue.

Police appeal for anyone who may have relevant footage from Strand Road, from 9.30 pm onwards, or from the Westland Street/Marlborough Terrace area from that time to approximately 10 pm, which may assist the police investigation to call 101, quote reference 1681 of 17/02/25, or submit a report online via http://www.psni.police.uk/makeareport/

Inspector Gahan said: “Road safety is everyone’s responsibility.

“Remember the ‘Fatal Five’ and the steps you can take to avoid them – don’t drink and drive, slow down, don’t get careless, wear your seat belt and stay off your mobile phone.”
