Hanna welcomes sentence for abuse of Derry Mayor

SDLP Leader Claire Hanna MP has welcomed a jail sentence for a man who posted abusive messages online about SDLP Mayor of Derry and Strabane Lilian Seenoi-Barr.

Kevin Barry McIntyre was jailed for five months at Derry Magistrates’ Court on Friday.

He also targeted SDLP Foyle MP Colum Eastwood.

South Belfast and Mid Down MP Claire Hanna said: “Today’s sentencing sends a clear message that there will be no hiding place for those who think they can post whatever disgusting, racist messages they wish on social media.

“For too long people have been allowed to act with impunity online and I hope that this sentence will make people think twice in future, knowing that engaging in online abuse of this nature will result in significant consequences.

“Being a public figure should not mean having to put up with abuse, threats and intimidation as a matter of course.

“Both Lilian and Colum are committed representatives who care deeply about Derry and that is reflected in the strong mandates they hold to serve people in the city. I know nothing will deter them from continuing that work in future.”

Foyle MP Colum Eastwood said: “I am glad this matter has been dealt with and we are now seeing people held responsible for the things they say online.

“Views like this are in no way representative of the people of Derry who have taken Lilian into their hearts, as a refugee starting a new life in this city, as a worker in our community, as a councillor and now as our Mayor.

“I have dedicated my political career to serving the people of Derry and no threats, intimidation or anything else will stop me from continuing that work.”
