Young Donegal man Tiernan Kelly Doherty, who died in a tragic road accident at the weekend, has been remembered as a lovely young man and a multi-talented footballer.

The 18-year-old from Carndonagh died in a single-vehicle crash near Buncrana on the Inishowen Peninsula at 5am on Sunday morning.

He was the only occupant of the car.

The son of Kevin and Louise, Tiernan was a keen GAA player and soccer player and played with CLG Charn Domhnaigh and Carndonagh FC. Both clubs have issued heartfelt tributes to Tiernan and are providing support to members as they come to terms with the sudden loss.

Tiernan was a ‘star’, said CLG Charn Domhnaigh.

A tribute from the club said: “From a very young age it has been our privilege to watch Tiernan play football and hurling with skill & determination for our club and even more so in the last year as he had come through to start playing adult football for the club and showed us what we all knew, that he was a star.

“Tiernan was a shining example for our younger players and always greeted everyone with a smile.

“Whilst our loss is immense it’s nothing compared to that of his family and friends. We extend our deepest condolences to the Doherty & Kelly families at this time and our thoughts and prayers are with them all.”

Tiernan’s funeral will take place this Thursday, December 5.

The latest tragedy brings to 18 the number of people who have died on Donegal’s roads so far this year, compared to ten for all of last year.

Obituary Notice:

The tragic death has taken place of Tiernan Doherty, 14 Convent Road Carndonagh.

Shocked and saddened by his passing are his loving parents Kevin and Louise.

Tiernan will be sadly missed by his younger brothers Kyrin, Cohen, and Keegan. Tiernan is deeply cherished by his broken-hearted girlfriend Kaylah.

Tiernan is deeply regretted by his grandparents Sean and Maureen, his aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family, friends and neighbours.

Removal on Monday evening at 4:30pm from Eternal Light Chapel of Rest, Letterkenny, F92XE35 going to his late residence.
