Tierney invites Education Minister to St Brigid’s College

SDLP Councillor Brian Tierney

SDLP Derry City and Strabane District Council Group Leader councillor Brian Tierney has invited Education Minister Paul Givan to visit St Brigid’s College in the city.

The school was announced as one of 28 set to receive a new school building in 2022, but no further progress has been made.

He has written to the Minister and extended an invitation on behalf of the school.

Councillor Tierney said: “The need for new school buildings for St Brigid’s College could not be greater.

“The school is already oversubscribed and there’s a growing demand for places both in the local community and right across our city as word of the fantastic school environment, educational experience for young people and the efforts of staff has spread.

“The Board of Governors and school leadership have been working for years to highlight the need for improved buildings and facilities and everyone was delighted when St Brigid’s was included along with other schools in the 2022 announcement.

“Since then there has been zero progress for St Brigid’s and other schools in our city while those in other parts of the North are pressing on ahead with their plans.

“During repeated enquiries I have been told by the Minister and his department that other schools remain ahead of St Brigid’s when it comes to need.

“I really struggle to see how that could be the case and have invited the Minister to come to St Brigid’s himself and see the fantastic work that goes on, the impact this school and its staff have on the lives of local young people and the need to get on with delivering the new school building project.”
