Police in Derry have made an arrest following multiple reports of a vehicle being driven dangerously in the city this afternoon, Thursday, October 17.

Police Derry City and Strabane said: “From around 1.45pm, police received reports of a vehicle that was sighted speeding and being driven dangerously in a number of areas, including Creggan Heights, Westway and Central Drive.

“Police responded and located a silver-coloured Lexus in the Groarty Road area, which matched the vehicle reported.

“Officers subsequently arrested a male on suspicion of offences, and he remains Police in custody at this time.

“Two police vehicles were damaged during the incident after being rammed by the Lexus. Unfortunately, two officers have been reported as being injured at this time.”

Inspector Craig added: “We know this incident caused great concern in the community, and we had reports of near misses in relation to this.

“I want to thank members of the public who called us straightaway and made a report, which meant we were able to respond quickly.

“The police vehicles will now be off the road for repairs, which impacts on the local community.

“I would ask anyone who may have captured any relevant dash cam or doorbell footage that could assist us in this case, to please get in touch by calling 101, quoting reference 818 of 17/10/24.”

A report can also be made online using the non-emergency reporting form via www.psni.police.uk/makeareport/

Information can also be provided anonymously to the Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111 or online at www.crimestoppers-uk.org
