She was speaking after the Minister for the Economy suggested the British Government has yet to confirm its position on the Enhanced Investment Zone in the North.
In a response to a Written Question tabled by Ms McLaughlin, the Minister said that it could take until Spring 2025 before the position is known.
Said the Foyle MLA: “Investment zones represent a huge opportunity for Northern Ireland to drive investment and attract more jobs and opportunities to our region, particularly for those areas that have been left behind.
“It is deeply concerning that the British Government has not confirmed its position on the promised zone here.
“This is particularly frustrating given the recent risk posed to Derry and Strabane’s City Deal and the continued uncertainty around two other City Deals.
“I understand that it would be the Minister’s intention for the zone to benefit the green economy in the North.
“While I would have some concerns that this funding may not be regionally balanced, there is no doubt that if implemented correctly, such funding could play a key role in the expansion of this sector.
“This is particularly true for a region like the North West, given our potential for high levels of renewable energy generation.
“The growth of the green economy is a key lever to raise economic productivity and reduce economic inactivity across the North. It is fundamental to the future of our economy.
“The Executive and the Minister for the Economy in particular must not wash his hands of the risk that could be posed to this funding.
“The North should be able to fully avail of all the opportunities the investment zone presents and it is incumbent on the government to deliver it without delay.”
