At Ulster University, our mission is to be a driving force for positive change in the North West region. We are connected to the community, fostering a rich cultural landscape, and creating lasting impact.

Ulster University isn’t just a place of learning; it’s a vital part of the North West’s heartbeat. We believe in the potential of this region and are deeply invested in its people. Through our widening access initiatives, we’re bringing real benefits to local communities.

Our partnerships with local stakeholders are pivotal in transforming the North West into a vibrant hub of culture and innovation, by supporting key events such as the City of Derry Jazz & Big Band Festival, Foyle Maritime Festival, Halloween and Foyle Film Festival.

Aeidin McCarter, Head of Culture, Derry City & Strabane District Council reflects on collaborative efforts:

“Council already has a strong collaborative partnership with Ulster University in terms of our work on the City Deal projects and our shared ambitions for the growth and development of the university and the economic and social benefits that will bring. Much work has gone into establishing the North West as a vibrant cultural destination with an events programme that is second to none, despite the increasing challenges and tightening budgets. I am delighted to welcome this partnership announcement as it continues to strengthen our ties with the university and will also positively impact on the programmes of our three flagship festivals. I hope we can continue that collaboration long into the future.”

At the heart of cultural engagement is our support for the Foyle Film Festival’s Industry Programme.

Eavan King, Head of Film, Nerve Centre highlights the impact of this partnership:

“Ulster University’s support of the Foyle Film Festival Industry programme has created a great opportunity for hundreds of young people throughout the local community to connect with the leading names of the Northern Ireland Screen Industries at Northern Ireland’s only Oscar, BAFTA & IFTA affiliated film festival.

“Foyle Film Festival’s partnership with Ulster University connects young people in our communities to great cinema, creative talent, and cutting-edge research in technologies. This partnership builds audiences for screen culture and strengthens the pathway for young people here to be part of a skilled workforce that meets the needs of a dynamic and rapidly evolving screen industry.”

At St Columb’s Hall, Le Foyer des Artistes brings together musicians from across the globe, united in their passion for sharing extraordinary music. Ulster University’s partnership with Le Foyer des Artistes has been instrumental in developing this initiative into a center of innovation and creativity, where students can gain invaluable experience in the business and creative industries.

Darren Hargan Founder and Artistic Director, Le Foyer Des Artistes said:

“In the pulsing heart of one of Ireland’s most ancient cities, we’ve created something truly special. With Ulster University as our partner, it’s not just about music; it’s a unique, independent centre of innovation and creativity. Here, talented students from the university’s business and creative industries departments are given the opportunity to be part of a larger vision, gaining invaluable experience that will shape their careers.”

“Ulster University’s sponsorship of our Midsummer Gala Concert has been a key factor in our success, contributing to an extraordinary second year that saw us nominated for a special commendation at the NI Arts & Business Awards. This is only the beginning of a very exciting journey that will enrich the lives of many students, complementing their studies with essential professional and interpersonal opportunities.”

At Ulster University, our campus is more than just a place of study—it’s a hub for activities that benefit the North-West community. We pride ourselves on the strong relationships we’ve built with local organisations and we’re committed to making a difference.
