SDLP MLA Mark H Durkan has welcomed confirmation from Derry City and Strabane District Council that funding has been secured for infrastructural repairs at the city cemetery.

The MLA for Foyle said: “I am pleased to receive confirmation from Council that funding has been secured for roadwork repairs at the cemetery.

“I’ve been advised that the City Cemetery road infrastructure issues are currently sitting with Council’s Capital Development Team pending tender process.

“The city cemetery has been in a state of disrepair for quite some time, during which, I’ve been pushing to see the necessary remedial action carried out.

“People are literally stopping me in the street to complain about the increasing number, and deepening of existing potholes, littered throughout the site.

“The funding allocation will allow for essential remedial works of the road infrastructure however the scope of these works will be clarified once the tender process is completed.

Mr Durkan added: “I’ve also asked DfI Roads to refresh ‘slow’ road markings at the top gate and have requested repair work for water taps at the lower end of the cemetery which have been out of action.

“Delighted to see progress on this much-needed issue and want to commend council officers for their efforts in securing the necessary funding, especially given the challenging budget circumstances.”
