A young Donegal man who died in police custody in Portugal has been named.

Ryan Chan, 29, who was from Letterkenny, was found dead in his cell on Wednesday morning following his arrest on Tuesday evening in Portugal’s Albufeira holiday region.

He was being held in connection with an alleged knife attack against his partner.

The victim, a woman in her 20s, was treated in hospital for stab wounds and has since been released.

It is understood the couple were visiting Portugal for a special occasion.

Portugal’s military police force, the National Republican Guard stated that an investigation is underway into the circumstances of Mr Chan’s death.

The Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust has confirmed that it is assisting Mr Chan’s family.

The Irish Department of Foreign Affairs is also providing consular assistance to the family.
