A man in his 20s has been arrested in connection with a number of alleged arson and vandalism attacks last night on church properties in east Donegal near the border with Derry.

At approximately 9.45pm, Gardaí received reports of criminal damage to a property in St. Johnston.

A second report of criminal damage occurred later in the night and Gardaí conducted a search of the area.

A man, aged in his 20s was arrested a short distance from the scene.

It is believed the local Catholic church, St Baithin’s on Chapel Road was attacked as well as a Masonic Hall on the Derry Road and the Orange Hall in Main Street.

“The man was conveyed to a Garda station in the Donegal Division and is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984. Investigations are ongoing,” a garda spokesperson said.
