Co Derry man urinated in Garda van and ripped up cell blanket

A Co Derry man who urinated in the cell of a Garda van and then ripped up a blanket in a Garda station cell after being arrested has appeared in court.

Adam McClean, of Scutcher’s Lane, Draperstown, Magherafelt, was arrested by Gardai on the N15 road at Ballymagroarty Scotch, Ballintra, Co Donegal on August 7.

The 22-year-old was arrested for a breach of the peace and that he did use or engage in threatening , abusive or insulting words.

On the same date and at the same location he is charged with being a danger to himself or others.

After being arrested, McClean was taken to Ballyshannon Garda Station.

He is further charged that on August 7th last at Ballyshannon Garda Station, did damage property by urinating in the cell of a Garda patrol van.

He is also charged that at Ballyshannon Garda Station he ripped apart a cell blanket belonging to An Garda Siochana.

Garda Sergeant Maurice Doyle said Gardai had no objection to bail for McClean.

Sergeant Doyle said there may be further charges pending against McClean.

Judge Deirdre Gearty asked the accused if he had a solicitor and he replied he didn’t.

When asked if he wished to appoint a solicitor to defend him, McClean said he didn’t.

Judge Gearty remanded McClean on his own bond of €200 and ordered him to return to Ballyshannon District Court on September 20 next for directions from the Director of public Prosecutions in the case.

She also ordered him to be of good behaviour.
