The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) in the Republic has confirmed it is to carry out an investigation into the proposed sale of the popular Inishowen Independent.

The commission has been notified that Formpress Publishing plans to buy D&D Media, the owners of the Buncrana-based newspaper.

Formpress is a subsidiary of Iconic Newspapers Limited which owns a number of regional newspapers, including The Donegal Democrat.

“The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) is to carry out a full investigation into the proposed purchase by Formpress Publishing of D&D Media,” a statement issued a short time ago read.

“D&D Media are the owners of the Inishowen Independent newspaper in Donegal and its website inishowenindo.ie. Formpress Publishing owns and operates a number of local and regional newspaper titles across Ireland.”

The proposed transaction was notified to the CCPC in April 2024.

The Inishowen Independent was initially launched in March 2007 and is one of several regional newspapers in the area.

The newspaper’s print edition is published every Tuesday.
