There is widespread sadness at the passing of Derry-born barrister Desmond Murphy.

Mr Murphy, a hugely popular senior counsel, passed away at the Foyle Hospice earlier today.

Mr Murphy was a well-known face is courtrooms in Donegal and Dublin.

He became a Junior Counsel in 1978 before being elevated to a Senior Counsel in 2009.

Mr Desmond Murphy SC

A colourful character, Mr Murphy was a highly accomplished and sought-after barrister and appeared in many high-profile cases throughout his career which spanned more than four decades.

Amongst his many clients was the famous Irish pop duo Jedward who Mr Murphy represented in a case over merchandising rights back in 2017.

With typical gusto and fun, Mr Murphy agreed to be pictured with the pop duo as they posed outside the High Court in 2017.

Mr Murphy’s funeral details have yet to be announced.
