Derry motorist charged over spate of petrol station ‘drive-offs’

A Derry man has appeared in court facing sixteen charges of robbery and traffic offences at a number of petrol stations across Co Donegal.

Patrick McKinney, of Moyglass Place in Strathfoyle appeared by videolink at Letterkenny District Court.

The 39-year-old is charged with a variety of offences including ‘drive-offs’ from two service stations without paying for fuel.

McKinney is charged with driving off from Callaghan’s Filling Station in Moness, Burt and Kee’s Service Station in Laghey.

He is charged with driving off without paying for fuel to the total value of €346 on five different occasions at Callaghan’s Filling Station.

The accused, represented by solicitor Mr Rory O’Brien, is also charged with obstructing Gardai, having a fake driving license and handling stolen property, namely a Ford Transit Camper Van.

He is also charged with having no insurance or driving license when stopped by Gardai at Callaghan’s Filling Station on three different occasions.

McKinney is also charged that when arrested on July 30th, 2024 and brought to Buncrana Garda Station, he gave a false name and address to Garda Tomas McMahon.

This charge was Contrary to Section 6 (4) of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

McKinney did not speak during the brief hearing.

All the alleged offences took place between September 25th, 2023 and July 30th, 2024.

Judge Deirdre Gearty adjourned the case until later this month.
