Harkin: Lucid education poll reflects growing desire for integrated society

Results from LucidTalk’s NI-wide attitudinal poll has revealed that two thirds, 66% of people living in the Derry City and Strabane council area believe in Integrated Education, which sees children of different faiths, backgrounds and cultures educated together, side by side every day,

People Before Profit Councillor Shaun Harkin says that integrating education is common sense and should be the main model for our education system.

Said the Foyleside Cllr: “Segregation in education can never be a good thing.

“There is an industry of division in the North to reinforce sectarianism and protect the interests of the power blocks of Unionism and Nationalism.

“This poll reflects the growing desire for an integrated society.

“Nothing functions well in society when people are kept apart.

“Every person who lives in this place has a right to an education that sets them up for life, in a system free from religious intolerance and indoctrination.

“Ulster University estimate that segregation in education costs an additional £226 million per year.

“That is money that could be spent making sure every working class child, no matter what background they come from, has access to a free school day: free transport to school, uniforms, universal free school meals, and free access to school trips and extracurricular activities.

“Schools should never be segregated by religion or through the cruel process of academic selection.

“It’s time for radical change within the education sector.

“The people demand it.

“Education for all is a basic human right,” added Cllr Harkin.
