Local mum leads book treasure hunt in Derry park

Young bookworms of Derry and Letterkenny are in for a treat during fun ‘Look for a Book’ searches in local parks over the coming weekends.

Led by Letterkenny mum Michelle Kelly, the project will see around 80 children’s books hidden in Letterkenny Town Park and Ballymacool Park on Sunday 14th of July from 10am.

A second event will see another 80 books to discover in St. Columb’s Park in Derry on Sunday 21st of July.

Children can keep any book they find and enjoy their own reading adventures at home. There will also be some extra freebies and vouchers to discover during the hunt.

Spearheaded by Michelle Kelly, a Derry-based veterinary nurse and owner of the Magical Tales online bookshop, the project aims to ignite a love of reading within the community.

Michelle advises kids to look around the play areas and easily accessible places to discover the treasures.

Michelle’s 15-month-old son Harry (pictured above) is a little bookworm in the making, she said.

“Harry loves our reading time, pointing at things he likes on the pages. Reading books to a baby is brilliant for their development and literacy,” Michelle said.

As she looks forward to planting the surprises over the coming weekends, Michelle said the books will be suited to ages 4-7, and if a parent/guardian thinks a book isn’t suitable they can rehide them for others to find.

The Look for Book initiative is being sponsored by businesses across Letterkenny and Derry: Four Lanterns, Honeypot, Lurgybrack Open Farm, Arena7, Impacto Print, Ruff Walks, Bodycare Beauty Clinic, Turtle Tots, Vans 4U, Northwest Undersealing and Protective Coatings, M.J. Dunn & Sons Joinery.
