Russell Crowe at Paul’s Butchers in Derry this week

When a well known Gladiator rolls into Derry city on his way to Donegal, there was only one to place to take him for a hearty feed – Paul’s Butchers on Culmore Road.

Aussie actor Russell Crowe landed at the City of Derry Airport on Tuesday en route to the Inishowen Peninsula for the opening of the Muff Liquor Company.

Jarlath Malone wrote on Facebook: “When a Gladiator tells you he’s hungry there’s only one place I would take him.

“He said his ciabata was muchius lovelius and next time he’s in Derry he’ll call again for another one.”

Paul’s Butchers also took to the social media site to say: “When Russell was in town he had to swing by Paul’s for a Steak Ciabatta meal deal as that’s ‘where everyone told him to go for a good bite on the go’.”

His slight diversion to Paul’s explains a lot for those who were patiently waiting on him in Donegal.

Said one guest at the Muff Liquor Company brand home launch: “This explains why he was late for the launch in Muff!

“The actor jetted into Derry on Tuesday before crossing into Inishowen on a flying visit, before jetting away on his music tour.”

Crowe is now officially one of the ‘Muff Men’ who have invested in the company.

Four other ‘Muff Men’ investors are comedian Jimmy Carr, former RTE Late Late Show presenter Ryan Tubridy, popstar Ed Sheerin and former Boyzone front man Ronan Keating.

Jimmy Carr couldn’t make the launch night and sent a message, saying: “I’m unfortunately stuck in London but my minds is fixated on Muff!

“I can’t stop thinking about Muff, and not just any Muff, The Muff Liquor in Co Donegal.”
