A motorist has died after a tree fell on their car during Storm Isha in Co Derry, according to reports.

The man, who was in his 60s, was driving a Vauxhall Vivaro van on the Broad Road in Limavady on Sunday night.

The male driver of the other van involved, a Citreon Berlingo, has been taken to hospital for treatment.

The road was closed for a time but has now reopened.

SDLP Councillor Ashleen Schenning described the death as “terrible, terrible news”.

“To wake up and realise that, as a result of a tree coming down, someone lost their life is just devastating,” she added.

Local MLA Claire Sugden said it was “very sad news”.

“A devastating consequence of last night’s storm. My condolences to his family and friends.”

The NI Ambulance Service said it received an emergency call shortly before 10 pm.

Investigations continued on Monday into the cause of the fatal accident.

The police have appealed for anyone who can help with their inquiries to get in touch.

In a statement, the ambulance service said two had been taken to Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry by ambulance following the crash shortly before 10pm on Sunday.

Two emergency crews had been sent to the scene.

A PSNI spokesperson said: “The road has been closed at its junctions with Windyhill Road and Rathmore Road.

“We are aware of footage posted online of the reported collision and would respectfully ask people not to share this.”
