SDLP MLA Mark H Durkan has welcomed some remedial work which has been carried out by Derry City and Strabane District Council at the Derry City Cemetery.

It follows confirmation that funding had been secured for infrastructural repairs at cemeteries across the district.

Said Foyle MLA: “I’ve been liaising with Council around maintenance and repair works for the city cemetery.

“Pleased that following concerns which I raised on behalf of constituents about the current state of graveyards in the area in particular, the road infrastructure, work is now underway to improve safety and install a new access gate at the Kildrum Gardens entrance.

“Some road and path repairs have already been carried out at the city cemetery as well as work to remove weeds and maintain green areas.

“Funding has been secured to complete wider essential remedial works in cemeteries across the city and I await further detail on what this will entail.

“I want to thank the council staff, especially the Streetscape & Cemeteries Team for the work they’ve carried out so far and their efforts amid a very challenging budget.”
