Harkin: O% for Translink workers a massive pay cut and insult

People Before Profit Cllr Shaun Harkin has said that 0 per cent offer to Translink workers is a massive pay cut and insult.

Translink workers are striking today Friday, December 15 and tomorrow, Saturday, December 16.

They will also be striking next Friday, December 22.

Said the Foyle councillor: “People Before Profit stand in solidarity with striking Translink workers.

“We fully support their demand for a fair and decent pay rise and condemn the 0% pay offer imposed by Translink management and the Department for Infrastructure.

“A 0% pay offer in a cost of living crisis is completely unacceptable.

“It’s not a pay freeze, it’s actually a massive pay cut.

“Workers and their trade unions have been given no choice. It’s an insult that demands action.

“Translink workers are not to blame for the disruption caused by the strike.

“The full responsibility lies with the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Chris Heaton-Harris, who has engineered a pay crisis seeking to advance a political agenda.

“He has imposed a brutal budget that starves our public services of adequate funding and undermines the livelihoods of our public sector workers.

“Our transport workers are crucial to our communities.

“They deserve fair pay and proper investment in public transport is key to addressing equality, access and climate change.

“Lets send a clear message to Translink management, Stormont and the Tories that we will fight for fair pay and our public services by backing the strikers.

“Victory to all those members in Unite, Siptu and GMB.

“We need more actions like this where trade unions join together in coordinated strike action.

“Unity is strength.”
