A church sacristy was ransacked during a spate of burglaries across Moville and Greencastle in Donegal yesterday.

A major investigation is underway into four burglaries and an attempted theft in the coastal towns in the early hours of Monday morning.

Homes, businesses and St. Columba’s Church, Ballinacrae, Moville, were among the properties targetted.

The first burglary occurred at a house in the Meenletterbale, Lecamy, Moville area between midnight and 3am on 11th December.

It is believed that entry was gained to the house through an unlocked rear door, and a sum of cash, a Dewalt angle grinder, and a Dewalt drill were stolen.

Gardaí were en route to this burglary call when they observed that the lights were on inside St. Columba’s Church, Ballinacrae. Upon investigation, they found that the front door of the church had been forced open, as had the sacristy door.

The sacristy had been ransacked and damage had been caused to a tabernacle.

Another couple of rooms within thechurch building were also ransacked after entry had been forced.

Nothing is believed to have been stolen but substantial damage was caused.

A burglary also occurred at Greencastle Golf Club overnight between Sunday, December 10th, at 7pm and Monday, December 11th, at 8.30am.

Entry was gained by forcing a rear window, and a number of doors were forced inside the building.

Rooms were ransacked, and a sum of cash was stolen from a cash register and a charity box.

Another burglary occurred at a property in the Greencastle area between 2.20am and 5.30am.

A purse was stolen from an unlocked car at the property, and an unlocked shed was entered and a red/black Makita fuel pump was stolen.

Finally, an attempted theft was reported at a property in the Carrowhugh, Greencastle area between 4am and 6.30am.

Two unlocked cars were entered and ransacked, although nothing was stolen from them.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone with information about these incidents, or who observed any suspicious activity or vehicles in the Moville/Greencastle area in the early hours of Monday morning, to contact Buncrana Garda Station on 074-9320540.

The Garda Confidential Line can be reached on 1800 666 111.

Anyone who may have been in the Moville/Greencastle areas between midnight and 7am on Monday, December 11th, and has dash cam footage is asked to make it available to Gardaí.
