Sadness as body found in search for missing Brian Harkin

Body of missing person Brian Harkin located by volunteer rescue workers

The search for missing Derry man Brian Harkin has been called off.

It follows the sad news that a body was found on Sunday by volunteer rescue workers after over two weeks of intensive searching.

Brian had missing since October 26, 2023 and was last scene in the Holly Lane area of Derry.

In a statement, Community Rescue Service said: “CRS Western District, supported by volunteers from our other teams, have carried out searches for a high risk missing person in the North West area for the last 17 days, with searches contining every day and into each night that was sadly brought to a conclusion today.

“Over the course of the search our volunteers were joined by colleagues from Foyle Search and Rescue and Search And Rescue Dog Association – SARDA Ireland North.

“We regret to inform you that earlier on Sunday a CRS search team located a body believed to be that of the missing person.

“The management and volunteers of the Community Rescue Service extend our deepest sympathy to the family and friends of the deceased.”

In a statement, the PSNI said: “Police are no longer searching for missing person, Brian Harkin.

“Thank you to everyone for their assistance.”
