Funeral details for a nine-year-old boy who tragically died in a hit-and-run in Co Donegal have been released.

The details were revealed as a man is due to appear in court after being charged by gardai investigating the incident.

Ronan Wilson, from Kildress in Co Tyrone, had been visiting the Donegal town of Bundoran when he was struck by a vehicle on Saturday evening at Atlantic Way.

His remains will be reposing at his family home from 2pm today, Tuesday, September 26.

His cortege will leave the family home on Thursday, September 28, at 11:15 am for 12 noon Requiem Mass in St. Mary’s Church, Dunamore.

His burial will take place be afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.

His loved ones have requested that only family come to the house from 10pm until 10am and on the morning of the funeral.

On Sunday evening, gardai said a man in his 20s had been arrested for an alleged offence under the Road Traffic Act in relation to the collision.

On Monday, gardai said the arrested man had been charged. He is due to appear before the District Court sitting in Carrick-on-Shannon at 10.30 am today for a first remand hearing.

The incident occurred shortly after 9:20pm on Saturday evening.

Gardaí and emergency services were alerted that a child was hit by a vehicle on Atlantic Way, Bundoran.

Gardai said the vehicle failed to remain at the scene of the collision.

Ronan was pronounced deceased at the scene a short time later.

The road on which Ronan was struck is close to a fairground, swimming pool, caravan park and holiday apartments and was near an access road to the beach.

Ronan’s body was removed to the mortuary at Sligo Hospital.

Ronan’s father Dean Wilson said the family “will never be the same” following the child’s death.

“I never thought I’d be saying this but I’ve lost my wee Roro; my main man, my hero and son,” he posted on his Facebook page.

“I love him so much , he’s been taken from us by a hit-and-run driver. We will never be the same without you, we can’t cope. I’m broken.

“Roro was the best son anyone could ask for. Nine years of pure pleasure.

“Rest in peace my son and best friend. Love you forever. From Daddy, Mummy, Calum and Amy and all our surrounding family and friends.

“We love you Ronan.”
