Enagh Lough: Mass to be held for teenage friends who tragically drowned

Joseph Sebastian and Reuven Simon tragically died in Derry’s Enagh Lough in August 2022

A Mass will be held in Derry this evening, Tuesday, August 29, to mark the first anniversary of the deaths of two teenage friends who drowned last year while swimming in Enagh Lough.

Reuven Simon and Joseph Sebastian were swimming at Enagh Lough on August 29, 2022 when they got into difficulty.

The tragedy last year sparked calls for a review of safety measures at the lough.

A multi-agency meeting was then convened by Derry City and Strabane District Council in October 2022 to address safety concerns at the site.

Ownership over the lough proved to be a complex issue, with several different landowners owning various parts around the edge of the area.

A council spokesperson said they have erected signage at the site following approval from landowners and funding from several sources, including the Honourable Irish Society.

The first anniversary Mass will be held at St Columb’s Church, Chapel Road at 7.30pm.

The mother of one of two drowned boys has called for improved safety measures at Enagh Lough.

“We don’t want to lose any more life in that lake,” Reuven’s mother Saly Kuruvilla told BBC News NI.
