People Before Profit Councillor Shaun Harkin

People Before Profit Cllr Shaun Harkin said has called on the public to support community sector protests to Stop the Cuts to widespread services.

Said Cllr Harkin: “Widespread cuts demanded by the Tory Secretary of State will devastate community organisations.

“Daily cuts being announced across Stormont departments aren’t punishing the DUP. They’re punishing people in all our communities.

“Children’s education, women’s groups and the vulnerable are being callously targeted.

“Community organisations providing essential services and thousands of workers in the community sector are threatened if these cuts are allowed to go through.

“This isn’t because there is no money. It’s a political choice by the Secretary of State to exploit Stormont deadlock to unleash Thatcher-style attacks.

“Whether it’s health service workers, teachers, early years providers or community sector organisations – the Tories are determined to let everyone here know we don’t matter to them.

“People Before Profit fully back protests organised by the community sector and supported by trade unions demanding these cuts are reversed.

“We need the broadest possible resistance to Tory cuts. Everyone is being impacted so everyone, from all backgrounds, should be involved in taking a visible stand.

“All parties demanding the DUP end its selfish block on a Stormont Executive should make a commitment not to implement callous austerity.

“Grassroots mobilisation is key to stopping the cuts alongside advancing the discussion on how we can best bring about the change people in all communities here desperately need.”
