SDLP Infrastructure spokesperson and Foyle MLA Mark H Durkan

SDLP Infrastructure Spokesperson Mark H Durkan MLA has welcomed progress on efforts to improve safety along Creggan Hill with particular focus at both Brooke Park and Rosemount Primary School Helen Street entrances.

The safety works are being progressed in accordance with the findings of a traffic speed assessment secured by Mr Durkan following a request made in July 2021 to then Infrastructure Minister, Nichola Mallon.

Said the Foyle MLA: “I’m pleased to receive confirmation from DfI Roads that progress on safety improvements along this dangerous stretch of road, is finally being made.

“Myself and others, have worked alongside residents and schools over the past few years to secure much needed traffic calming measures.

“The safety concerns in this area are valid and following the extensive regeneration of Brooke Park, this beautiful civic amenity has grown in popularity thus underscoring the acute need for safety measures.

“Footfall in the area has increased significantly and with Rosemount Primary School also nearby, the traffic along this main thoroughfare is consistent posing a danger to children, parents and anyone crossing this busy road.

“The traffic speed assessment which I secured from the Infrastructure Minister in July 2021 has now been carried out with results determining that a controlled crossing is necessary.

“The Department has also agreed to implement my proposal for dropped kerbs at Helen Street and Marlborough Road junctions.

“The design process is underway and will be progressed as soon as funding allocations are made.

“I look forward to the delivery of this essential work which will greatly benefit pedestrians and road users alike.”
