Foyle MP Colum Eastwood meets US Special Envoy to Ireland Joe Kennedy in Washington

SDLP Leader Colum Eastwood MP discussed the need for investment across the North when meeting US Special Envoy Joe Kennedy in Washington on Wednesday.

Mr Eastwood met Mr Kennedy as part of his engagement while in America for St Patrick’s week.

They also discussed the current political situation in the North and the need to restore the Stormont institutions to deliver for people here.

Said the Foyle MP: “It was great to meet with US Special Envoy Joe Kennedy to discuss the pressing issues facing people across the North and the need for a government that will deliver solutions to the many problems we are currently experiencing.

“The SDLP recognises the value of having someone like Joe Kennedy advocating for the North and working to attract new investment and businesses opportunities.

“He will have an important role to play in making the most of our dual market access that has the potential to deliver positive change for our economy and we look forward to working with him to make that happen.

“I also pressed upon him the need to target investment towards areas like Derry and north/west Belfast that have suffered from years of neglect and underinvestment.

“I know how much these places and people there can contribute to growing our economy and it’s long past time they got their fair share.

“Joe Kennedy understands the issues we are grappling with in the North and he is determined to play a positive role in helping us address them.

“I believe that he will be a powerful ally as we work to put the last few years behind us and move forward, making the most of the opportunities we have been given and attracting much needed jobs and investment to the North.”
