DCI John Caldwell still in a critical condition in hospital

Detectives investigating the attempted murder of Detective Chief Inspector John Caldwell on February 22, 2023 have arrested a 25-year-old man in connection with the claim of responsibility made following the attack.

He was arrested under Section 41 of the Terrorism Act 2000 following a search of a property in the Derry area.

He was also arrested in relation to a hoax security alert last month on Lone Moor Road in Derry where a suspicious object was found in the middle of the road, close to Celtic Court which caused significant disruption for local residents and football fans arriving for the Derry City v Shamrock Rovers game.

The man has been taken to Musgrave Serious Crime Suite where he is being questioned by detectives.

The New IRA claimed responsibility for the murder bid on DCI Caldwell shortly after he finished a coaching session with son’s football team in Omagh.

The New IRA statement posted on a wall in Derry

He was hit four times and a result has been left with life-changing injuries.

DCI Caldwell remains in a critical but stable condition in hospital while under sedation.

The New IRA claim of responsibility was made on a typed statement and posted on a shop wall in Creggan last week.

Independent charity Crimestoppers have offered a £150,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those who tried to kill DCI Caldwell.
