Elected Members of Derry City and Strabane District Council’s Governance and Strategic Planning Committee have unanimously supported a proposal to reiterate its support for the A5 project and for the Enough is Enough campaign calling for the infrastructural project to go ahead.

The proposal came before the monthly meeting of the committee at the Guildhall following a deputation by Niall McKenna, Damian Harvey and Brendan Hurl from the Enough is Enough Lives Lost on the A5 Campaign.

They outlined the work they are doing to raise awareness for the need for the road to be prioritised and delivered for the people of the west.

Elected members at the meeting heard about loss of life on the A5 road and the urgent need for the A5 to be prioritised as well as the need for wider participation from the public in the ongoing A5 public consultation process.

Members voted unanimously to support the campaign and to do all they can to positively promote the need for work to begin on this vital road infrastructure as soon as possible.

The deputation at the meeting also outlined the need for immediate mitigating road improvements to help save lives in the interim period and called on Council to do what it can to share road safety messaging to educate people on the danger of driving on this road.
