Chief Constable: Murder bid detective ‘critically ill and sedated’

Chief Constable Simon Byrne with the leaders of the five main political parties today in a show of solidarity over murder bid on senior detective

PSNI Chief Constable Simon Byrne has said a senior detective remains critically ill and heavily sedated in Derry’s Altnagelvin Hospital after dissident republicans tried to kill him in front of his son.

Mr Byrne also said the wife and son of Detective Chief Inspector John Caldwell have been left badly affected by the New IRA murder bid.

DCI Caldwell has been a police officer for 26 years, with most of his service in CID and the PSNI’s Major Investigation Team.

Police have revealed that two gunmen shot the 48-year-old multiple times as he was putting footballs into his car in Omagh on Wednesday, February 22, around 8 pm.

A fourth man, believed to be a member of the New IRA’s political wing, Saoradh, was arrested over the attempted murder on Friday morning.

The 22-year-old was arrested in the Coalisland area under Section 41 the Terrorism Act.

He is currently being quizzed at Musgrave Serious Crime Suite.

Three men – aged 38, 45, and 47 – who were arrested in Omagh and Coalisland on Thursday morning during dawn raids – remain in custody.

Mr Byrne provided an update alongside leaders from Northern Ireland’s five main parties on Friday.

Political leaders from Sinn Fein, DUP, SDLP, UUP and Alliance presented a united front with the chief constable.

Mr Byrne said this was a significant show of solidarity that showed the “sheer sense of outrage at this pointless and senseless attack”.

DCI Caldwell had been coaching a youth football team on Wednesday when dissident gunmen struck out of the shadows near a sports complex in Omagh.

Following the murder bid, all police officers have been advised to review their personal security while off duty.
