SDLP MLA Mark H Durkan said that weight loss jab Wegovy could prove life-changing for many people struggling with obesity but urged strict regulation on its usage.
It follows confirmation that the self-administered injection will now be available for purchase in UK High Street chemists.
The medication must be approved by a medical professional and guidance recommends that it should not be used for a more than a two-year period.
Said the Foyle MLA: “Last year, NICE recommended the use of weight loss injections (Wegovy or semaglitude) to help people struggling with obesity by suppressing appetite and aiding weight management.
“It will be made available on the NHS in England after receiving approval and will be offered for purchase across UK High Street chemists.
“This drug, if used correctly could help tackle the obesity epidemic and could be life-changing for many individuals struggling with their weight.
“In recent years I’ve sought updates from the caretaker Health Minister asking when this weight loss jab would be available on the NHS in Northern Ireland.
“This weight loss medication must be prescribed by a medical professional and is by no means a ‘quick fix’, rather it’s use must be strictly regulated and prescribed for those with one or more weight related cormobidity.
“Reports from people who availed of this drug say it’s made life liveable again. It could potentially be a real game-changer.
“It presents a safer alternative to weight loss which could prevent people taking more drastic steps, by seeking irreversible bariatric surgery elsewhere and has the potential to alleviate pressures on NHS services.”
