Eastwood: Working people cannot pay price for Tory incompetence

Foyle MP and SDLP leader Colum Eastwood

SDLP Leader Colum Eastwood has said that working families cannot be forced to pay the price for the incompetence of the current Conservative government following the British Chancellor’s announcement that energy support will come to an end in April and public spending cuts are likely.

Chaos has gripped the Tory government following the mini-budget that sent markets into meltdown and forced hardship on homeowners who saw significant increases in mortgage repayments due to surging interest rates.

Mr Eastwood said the government is devoid of political authority and economic credibility and should give way to a Labour administration.

SAid the Foyle MP: “The Tory government shredded what little political authority and economic credibility they had left when they promised unfunded tax cuts for the mega-rich while working people were left to a market meltdown that sent mortgage rates through the roof.

“While the forced reversal of the millionaire’s budget is welcome, working people cannot be expected to pay the price for this disaster.

“The new British Chancellor, for this week at least, has indicated that energy support will come to an end in April, forcing working people into a cliff edge situation that will leave many unable to keep their heat and lights on.

“This comes on top of expected cuts to public spending which disproportionately impact working families and vulnerable households.

“And still, this government refuses to introduce additional windfall taxes on energy giants who are making money hand over fist. That is an utter injustice.

“We need more than just a shuffling of the deckchairs on the Tory Titanic.

“It is far beyond time for a change of government in London and a new Labour administration that will put an end to this disastrous Conservative rule.

“And as more and more people consider a future free from the callousness of political leaders like Liz Truss and Jeremy Hunt, it is more important than ever that those of us who believe in it set out the opportunities presented by a social democratic new Ireland.”
