SDLP MLA Mark H Durkan has welcomed the lighting of council buildings for Baby Loss Awareness week 9th-15th October 2022.
Mr Durkan said visibility campaigns such as these helps to break down stigma and encourages parents who have suffered the loss of their babies to open a dialogue and seek support.
The MLA for Foyle has also pursued the introduction of a pregnancy loss certificate for bereaved parents who experience a miscarriage before 24-week gestation with the Health Minister.
The provision would offer parents the option to officially record their baby loss and receive a certificate of recognition.
Said the Foyle MLA: “Visible public awareness campaigns such as this, run by SANDS (the stillbirth and neonatal death charity) helps break the silence around this sensitive, difficult subject.
“Every year I’m approached by brave parents who have lost their babies, to help raise awareness of stillbirths and neonatal death.
“It’s crucial we open a dialogue for those affected by the unimaginable loss of their babies.
“As ever, further support provision is needed to assist with the psychological, emotional and social distress experienced by bereaved parents.
“The need for adequate after care as well as support for parents is crucial.
“While steps have been made to improve services, including the expansion of the Northern Ireland Bereavement Network, more is needed to ensure parents can access compassionate, timely support.
“The SDLP continue to work for the introduction of a certificate to recognise early pregnancy loss, which would provide a small but meaningful token to help provide emotional solace to parents at such a difficult time.
“No mother or father should be left suffering in silence.”
