Tierney requests update on key planning decisions

Former Mayor of Derry and Strabane Councillor Brian Tierney

SDLP Group Leader councillor Brian Tierney has requested an update on a number of key planning decisions across the Derry City and Strabane District Council area.

Councillor Tierney has written to the Department for Infrastructure around the new Lidl premises at Crescent Link, the Buncrana Road Greenway, a new sporting facility for Strabane Athletic and 258 social housing units on the Springtown Road in Derry.

All of the projects have been backed by the council and Councillor Tierney asked the department to detail their reasons for the current delays.

Said Cllr Tierney: “After a number of delays to key infrastructure projects across our council area, I have written directly to the department to ask them for an update and to spell out their reasons for the current delays.

“These projects have been in the works for a long time and it’s important that they are not unnecessarily delayed.

“When built these projects will make a real difference to people living in this area, new businesses will lead to much-needed employment opportunities, while this area is crying out for more social housing with waiting lists getting longer all the time.

“New sports facilities and green spaces will also be welcomed by the local community.

“Much work has gone into all of these planning applications, with years of ground work being done in some instances, and it’s unacceptable that they have been beset with delays and very little communication from the department.

“I hope to receive a prompt response to my letter with an update for everybody concerned so we can get on with making these projects a reality, with work hopefully starting in the near future.”
