Durkan welcomes steps to improve safety along Creggan Road

SDLP Foyle MLA Mark H Durkan

THE SDLP’s Mark H Durkan has welcomed confirmation from the Department for Infrastructure roads that steps are being taken to address safety concerns along Creggan Hill, paying particularly attention to the layout at Helen Street and entrance to Brooke Park.

Mr Durkan has campaigned for several years to address issues along this stretch of road and improve pedestrian infrastructure.

Said the Foyle MLA: “I’ve been working to improve the safety along this stretch of road for quite some time.

“The safety concerns in this area are valid and following the extensive regeneration of Brooke Park, this beautiful civic amenity has grown in popularity thus underscoring the acute need for safety measures.

“Footfall in the area has increased significantly and with Rosemount Primary School also nearby, the traffic along this main thoroughfare is consistent.

“Last year, I secured a commitment from the Infrastructure Minister that a traffic speed assessment would be conducted in the area to improve safety particularly for school staff, parents and pupils.

“In addition, I submitted a request for dropped kerbs on the footpaths along this route to facilitate access to the park.

“At present, the kerbs along this pavement are relatively high posing difficulty for parents with pushchairs or wheelchair users.

“Pleased that in response to my proposal, DfI Roads have confirmed that improvements around the current layout at both Helen Street and Marlborough Road are being considered alongside the lowering of kerbs opposite Brooke Park.

“I look forward to the progress of this essential work which will greatly benefit pedestrians and road users alike.”
