Six-year-old Ethan McCourt who sadly died in car accident

Tributes have been paid to a six-year-old boy who has died in hospital almost a week after a one-vehicle crash at a Co Derry roundabout.

Ethan Michael McCourt, from the Bellaghy area, was injured following the crash in Castledawson shortly after 07:45 am on Monday, June 20.

Police said the driver of the car remains in hospital.

The Right Reverend Monsignor Andrew Dolan described Ethan as a “typical wee boy” who was “just so full of fun”.

The parish priest from St Mary’s Church in Bellaghy said that the little boy was an only child who would have celebrated his seventh birthday later this week.

He said Ethan was on his way to school, which he loved, when the incident happened.

“He loved playing with all his wee friends at St Mary’s school,” he said.

“The teachers and just the whole school are in complete shock.

“There was a lot of shock last week but now there’s just an awful sadness over the whole village after this news.

“Everyone here in Bellaghy has, and continues to have, Ethan and his whole family in their prayers.”

GAA club Bellaghy Wolfe Tones paid tribute to their player on social media.

The club said: “We are devastated to share the news that our underage player Ethan McCourt has sadly passed to his eternal rest following an accident earlier this week.

“We also keep his Father Declan in our thoughts as he receives continued treatment in hospital.

“Deepest condolences to his parents Oonagh & Declan & extended McKenna & McCourt families.

“Ar dheis de go raibh a anam dilis.”

Witnesses or those with dash-cam footage have been asked to contact police.
