Jack Henry who has sadly passed away aged five

A five-year-old Co Derry boy has been remembered for his “beautiful big smile” following his death.

Tributes were paid to Jack Henry from Moneymore, who is understood to have taken ill yesterday morning and later passed away.

Described as an “avid Derry supporter”, his death comes just days after he was pictured alongside the county’s GAA captain Chrissy McKaigue when his side won the Ulster Championship on Sunday.

From a prominent GAA family in Co Derry, Jack’s father Brendan is a former player and his grandfather Eugene Young is heavily involved in the sport.

He is also related to former Derry GAA manager Paddy Crozier.

St Treas GFC, Ballymaguigan paid tribute to Jack, recalling how he “touched the hearts of so many during his short life”.

In a statement posted on social media, the club said it was “deeply saddened to learn of the passing of young Jack Henry”.

“We wish to extend our deepest sympathies to his parents Brendan and Enya, his brother Paddy, grandparents Maureen, Anthony, Eugene and Lorna, aunts, uncles, cousins and the entire Henry,Young and Crozier family circle,” it said.

“Jack has touched the hearts of so many during his short life – his beautiful big smile was seen regularly at club activities where he spent many days with his devoted parents and grandparents.

“He will be greatly missed by all who have had the pleasure of knowing this wonderful little boy. We keep Jack and all his family in our thoughts and prayers.”

The club also said that all activities would be postponed “until further notice as a mark of respect”.

Henry Joy McCracken GAC Moneymore also paid tribute.

“Jack was a very special little boy, who was born into a family heavily involved with the GAA, and through this we had the pleasure of getting to know Jack and that beautiful smile,” it said on Facebook.

“An avid Derry supporter, who sported his colours on Sunday past.”

SDLP assembly member Patsy McGlone said: “My sincerest sympathies to the Henry, Young and extended families. God rest his gentle wee soul.”

Other tributes posted on social media have described Jack as “a beautiful wee man” and “a very special boy”.

One tribute said he “had the most gorgeous eyes that could melt your heart”, while another said “Jack was a beautiful little boy who brought joy to everyone who met him”.

Another tribute added: “”What a beautiful boy that touched all our hearts with his smiles and laughs”.

Jack is survived by his parents Brendan and Enya, brother Paddy and wider family circle.
