McCann: PBP only Northern party making unions stronger

Eamonn McCann and Gerry Carroll on their first day at Stormont in 2015

VETERAN Derry trade union activist Eamonn McCann and a former Foyle MLA says that People Before Profit is the on[y party in 100 years to try to make Northern unions stronger.

Mr McCann, awho is the election agent for PBP’s Foyle Assembly candidate Shaun Harkin, said: “People Before Profit represents the only clear alternative to the Stormont establishment”

“The five biggest parties – the DUP, SF, the SDLP, Ulster Unionists, Alliance – are all promising great things if they are given a mandate on May 5th.

“Four of them have been in every Executive since the day the Assembly was set up. Alliance joined in 2010 and has had its feet under the table ever since.

“All five of them say they want ‘change’. This can only mean change from the way the Executive operated during the years when they were part of it.

“Their plans for the future are based on hoping voters don’t remember their past.

“People Before Profit represents the only clear alternative. We are not Orange or Green, we are Reds.

“Our priority is to advance the interests of the working class.

“This is why we proposed the Trades Union Freedom Bill to remove some of the shackles holding trades unions back.

“We are the only party in the 100-year history of Stormont to put forward proposals for making unions stronger.

“Nationalist and Unionist parties have historically been defined by their refusal to take class interests seriously.

“They haven’t changed.

“It’s still all classes of ‘our’ community in competition with all classes of “their” community.

“None of them puts the specific interests of people in the bottom half of society irrespective of community at the top of their agenda.

“They may have adjusted their rhetoric, but the reality of what they do remains the same.

“People Before Profit MLAs will carry the fight for union rights into the next Assembly.

“Prices are rocketing, pay held down, the need for workers to be organised to defend their wages and conditions is clearer than ever.

“Only the politics of People Before Profit can undercut the sectarian divide and open the way to a wholesale re-organisation of society in the North and link up with progressive campaigns in the South to create a better Ireland.

“The way to support workers in this election is to vote number one for Shaun Harkin.”
