Derry City and Strabane District Council hosted a ‘Food for Thought’ summit in the Guildhall yesterday.

The event was attended by a range of local organisations, businesses and individuals interested in the local food system.

Through a series of discussions and activities, the Food for Thought summit explored district-wide, holistic approaches to adapting our food system in order to improve health, reduce food insecurity, build community resilience and reduce our impact on the environment.

The summit came to a tasty finish as attendees shared a meal from the Whitehorse Hotel containing local, seasonal produce, shining a spotlight on local food and restaurants.

Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Alderman Graham Warke, opened the event and said it was an informative day.

“I was delighted to address the attendees at Thursday’s Food for Thought summit and to take part in a busy and exciting day that explored more about how we can make changes in our approach to food that can have a wider impact.

“It covered many different topics and sparked conversation about how we are connected to food and the way that it brings us together.

“Discussions included topics like the relationship between the food system and issues like climate change, population health, and the local economy.

“We heard more about how, no matter what your role or interest is, we all have a part to play in making positive steps and I hope that today’s summit will help each of you on that journey.”

Allan Bogle, Council’s Sustainable Food Places Co-ordinator, added: “This summit was another step in our commitment to becoming a sustainable food region.

“Discussions involved how food can play a positive role in making changes for us as individuals, our local economy and also for the environment around us.

“Food is something that unites us all as people, and through the event we saw a lot of different people come together and share their viewpoints on the topics at hand.

“We were able to learn from one another and come away from the day with a greater understanding and knowledge about the next steps that we can all take.”
