SDLP politicians in Derry have welcomed progress on improvement measures for shop fronts in Derry.

They were speaking after planning permission applications were submitted to Derry City and Strabane District Council for various shop front improvements for businesses along Spencer Road, Chapel Road and Dungiven Road.

Said Foyle MLA Sinead McLaughlin: “Investing in improvements to many shop fronts along Upper Spencer Road and surrounding streets is a welcome boost to local traders as we exit the pandemic.

“Small businesses have struggled over recent years and any assistance to them is welcome.

“These improvements will give this part of the Waterside and local traders a boost.”

Cllr Martin Reilly said: “I attended the meeting with business owners about this plan back before the pandemic hit and there was a lot of interest from local traders.

“This submission of planning permission for various premises is a big step forward for this project.

“I will continue to support Council officers in the Environment and Regeneration section of Council as they work to help improve the streetscape in this location.”
