THE SDLP’s Mark H Durkan has welcomed the restoration of gritting services in the Ballymagroarty area following an attack on a gritter on Monday evening.

The vehicle was attacked with stones as the driver was gritting the local roads.

Said the Foyle MLA: “I am pleased that after facilitating discussions between DfI and community leaders in Ballymagroarty, that gritting services are to be restored to the area after being withdrawn as a consequence of an attack on Monday night.

“This was a disgraceful attack on someone going about their job to make our community safer.

“This is a vital service in the Ballymagroarty area and across the city.

“I would urge people to educate their young people about the potentially catastrophic consequences of throwing missiles at vehicles.

“Well done to the community organisations taking positive action on this issue.”
