Eastwood: Pathetic threats from establishment parties must end

SDLP leader and Foyle MP Colum Eastwood

SDLP Leader Colum Eastwood has hit out after comments from the First Minister Paul Givan threatening to collapse the political institutions.

Mr Eastwood said the public were “sick, sore and tired of lazy threats and failing governance.”

Calling out the “establishment leadership”, he urged the public to choose a future this year that puts “people before politics”

Said the Foyle MP: “Here we go again – New Year, same old DUP. Shamefully, the DUP First Minister has once again issued a pathetic threat to collapse the Stormont institutions.

“People are sick, sore and tired of lazy threats and failing governance.

“All we’ve had from the DUP and Sinn Féin has been collapsing government or threats to collapse the government.

“After 15 years in joint office, the only thing the two First Ministers seem to agree on – is when the going gets tough, they throw their toys out on the pram.

“It’s childish, it’s reckless and it’s not good enough.

“In the middle of a global pandemic, with sky rocketing energy prices and a Brexit crisis, the establishment parties in the DUP and Sinn Féin are more interested in distraction and deflection politics than in delivery.

“Of course it suits them to keep the focus off their joint lack of delivery for our communities.

“My message to the public is simple, if you want change, you have to choose it.

“The new year can be a new start for people and politics in the North.

“Everyone will be faced with a choice – more of the same from people who have shown us that they are only interested in themselves.

“Or we can choose change with leaders who are talking about reducing energy bills, creating new university places so that our young people can make a life for themselves here and putting an end to the politics of fear and division for good,” added Mr Eastwood.
