Four further deaths, 2,156 new cases in North

THE Department of Health has reported a further 2,156 new cases in the North of Ireland in the last 24 hours.

That’s a huge rise of 575 on figures given yesterday for Monday.

There has been four further Covid-19-related deaths (none outside the current reporting period) bringing the total number of deaths (mostly in hospitals) linked to Coronavirus here since the start of the pandemic is 2,936.

None of these latest deaths was recorded in the Derry City and Strabane District Council area.

In the past week, the Department has recorded 12,166 new cases of Coronavirus.

There has been a further 163 positive cases in the Derry City and Strabane District Council area, a rise of 25 on numbers given yesterday for Monday.

Over the past seven days there have been a further 928 COVID-19 cases in the Derry and Strabane area.

This means that since the pandemic started in March there have now been 31,777 positive cases within the council boundary.

The rate of infection within the Derry and Strabane Council area is currently at 613.4 cases per 100,000 – now the fifth lowest rate of all 11 councils in the North.

The Department has to date recorded a total of 189 Coronavirus deaths within the Derry and Strabane council area to date – the lowest out of all councils here.

Bed occupancy across all hospitals remains at 107 per cent.

There are currently 315 patients in hospitals across the North with Coronavirus.

There are 32 patients being treated in intensive care with 27 patients on ventilators.

The Western Trust reports that 8.73 per cent of beds in Altnagelvin Hospital are COVID-19 occupied with staff treating 30 patients with Coronavirus.

Five of these patients are currently being treated in Altnagelvin’s ICU for COVID-19.

The hospital is currently running at 4.51 per cent over capacity for beds.

A total of 32 care homes are now dealing with a Coronavirus outbreak with a further 1,020 concluded Coronavirus outbreaks in care homes.

To date, a total of 3,262,441 Coronavirus vaccines have been administered in the North which included first and second dose vaccinations and the booster jab.
