Nine further deaths, 2,004 new cases in North

THE Department of Health has reported a further 2,004 new cases in the North of Ireland in the past 24 hours.

That’s a rise of 455 on figures given yesterday for Wednesday.

There have been nine further Covid-19-related deaths (none outside the current reporting period), with the total to date since the start of the pandemic (mostly in hospitals) now at 2,865.

Sadly, one of these latest deaths over was recorded in the Derry City and Strabane District Council area in the last 24 hours.

In the past week, the Department has recorded 11,815 new cases of Coronavirus.

There has been a further 118 positive cases in the Derry City and Strabane District Council area, a rise of 27 on numbers given yesterday for Wednesday.

Over the past seven days there have been a further 718 COVID-19 cases in the Derry and Strabane area.

This means that since the pandemic started in March there have now been 29,527 positive cases within the council boundary.

The rate of infection within the Derry and Strabane Council area has fallen slightly to 474.8 cases per 100,000 – still the lowest rate of all 11 councils in the North.

The Department has to date recorded a total of 184 Coronavirus deaths within the Derry and Strabane council area to date – the lowest out of all councils here.

Bed occupancy across all hospitals is now down to 102 per cent.

There are currently 370 patients in hospitals across the North with Coronavirus.

There are 33 patients being treated in intensive care with 22 patients on ventilators.

The Western Trust reports that 9.92 per cent of beds in Altnagelvin Hospital are COVID-19 occupied with staff treating 32 patients with Coronavirus.

Four of these patients are currently being treated in Altnagelvin’s ICU for COVID-19.

The hospital is currently running at 1.70 per cent under capacity for beds.

A total of 33 care homes are now dealing with a Coronavirus outbreak with a further 984 concluded Coronavirus outbreaks in care homes.

Ten out of 68 residential care homes in the Western Trust area are still dealing with a Coronavirus outbreak.

To date, a total of 2,986,203 Coronavirus vaccines have been administered in the North.
