Five further deaths, 1,549 new cases in North

THE Department of Health has announced a further 1,549 new cases in the North of Ireland in the past 24 hours.

That’s a fall of 382 on figures given yesterday for Tuesday.

There have been five further Covid-19-related deaths (none outside the current reporting period), with the total to date since the start of the pandemic (mostly in hospitals) now at 2,856.

None of these latest deaths over the weekend was recorded in the Derry City and Strabane District Council area.

In the past week, the Department has recorded 11,514 new cases of Coronavirus.

There has been a further 91 positive cases in the Derry City and Strabane District Council area, a fall of 28 on numbers given yesterday for Tuesday.

Over the past seven days there have been a further 714 COVID-19 cases in the Derry and Strabane area.

This means that since the pandemic started in March there have now been 29,409 positive cases within the council boundary.

The rate of infection within the Derry and Strabane Council area has fallen slightly to 470.0 cases per 100,000 – still the lowest rate of all 11 councils in the North.

The Department has to date recorded a total of 183 Coronavirus deaths within the Derry and Strabane council area to date – the lowest out of all councils here.

Bed occupancy across all hospitals is now down to 104 per cent.

There are currently 395 patients in hospitals across the North with Coronavirus.

There are 35 patients being treated in intensive care with 24 patients on ventilators.

The Western Trust reports that 9.35 per cent of beds in Altnagelvin Hospital are COVID-19 occupied with staff treating 34 patients with Coronavirus.

Four of these patients are currently being treated in Altnagelvin’s ICU for COVID-19.

The hospital is currently running at 1.98 per cent under capacity for beds.

A total of 33 care homes are now dealing with a Coronavirus outbreak with a further 983 concluded Coronavirus outbreaks in care homes.

Ten out of 68 residential care homes in the Western Trust area are still dealing with a Coronavirus outbreak.

To date, a total of 2,970,748 Coronavirus vaccines have been administered in the North.
