SANTA Claus sprinkled some north pole magic over Derry on Sunday as he led a festive themed procession through the city centre to switch on the Christmas lights.

He was joined by Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Alderman Graham Warke, and festive themed characters for the event where the biggest Christmas tree in Ireland, standing at 60 feet tall in Guildhall Square, was illuminated for the first time.

Mayor Warke said he was delighted to see thousands of families lining the route of the event which marks the start of Council’s Christmas programming for 2021.

“I was so pleased to take part in the parade on Sunday and see our beautiful city lit up for the first time for Christmas,” he said.

“The route was extended around the city centre so that everyone had their opportunity to see Santa and the characters in a safe environment.

“The format worked well and I was delighted to see so many smiling and happy faces enjoying the event.

“I would like to commend Council’s maintenance and electrical teams who worked hard all week to ensure the city was looking resplendent.

“Thank you to Santa Claus for taking time out from his busy schedule to attend the event, he assured me he will return on Christmas Eve to deliver presents for all the girls and boys in the City and District.”

The Uncover the Magic of Christmas programme includes the renowned Walled City Christmas Markets and the Mayor’s Magical Christmas Experience.
