Four more deaths, 1,164 new cases in North

THE Department of Health has announced a further 1,164 new cases in the North of Ireland in the past 24 hours.

That’s a fall of 317 on figures given yesterday for Wednesday.

There have been four further Covid-19-related deaths (one outside the current reporting period), with the total to date since the start of the pandemic (mostly in hospitals) now at 2,741.

None of these latest deaths were recorded in the Derry City and Strabane District Council area.

In the past week, the Department has recorded 7,993 new cases of Coronavirus.

There has been a further 63 positive cases in the Derry City and Strabane District Council area, a fall of 34 on numbers given yesterday for Wednesday.

Over the past seven days there have been a further 487 COVID-19 cases in the Derry and Strabane area.

This means that since the pandemic started in March there have now been 27,683 positive cases within the council boundary.

The rate of infection within the Derry and Strabane Council area has fallen slightly to 321.9 cases per 100,000 – still the lowest rate of all 11 councils in the North.

The Department has recorded a total of 178 Coronavirus deaths within the Derry and Strabane council area to date – the lowest out of all councils here.

Bed occupancy across all hospitals is now at 106 per cent.

There are currently 380 patients in hospitals across the North with Coronavirus.

There are 43 patients being treated in intensive care with 32 patients on ventilators.

The Western Trust reports that 8.31 per cent of beds in Altnagelvin Hospital are COVID-19 occupied with staff treating 38 patients with Coronavirus.

Six of these patients are currently being treated in Altnagelvin’s ICU for COVID-19.

The hospital is currently running at 1.94 per cent over capacity with beds.

A total of 36 care homes are now dealing with a Coronavirus outbreak with a further 945 concluded Coronavirus outbreaks in care homes.

A total of ten out of 68 residential care homes in the Western Trust area are still dealing with a Coronavirus outbreak.

To date, a total of 2,707,819 Coronavirus vaccines have been administered in the North.
