Ten further deaths, 948 new cases in North

THE Department of Health has announced a further 948 new cases in the North of Ireland in the past 24 hours.

That’s a fall of 53 on figures given yesterday for Saturday.

There have been ten further Covid-19-related deaths over the same period (one outside the current reporting period), with the total to date since the start of the pandemic (mostly in hospitals) now at 2,715

Sadly, four of these latest deaths over the weekend were recorded in the Derry City and Strabane District Council area.

In the past week, the Department has recorded 8,227 new cases of Coronavirus.

There has been a further 40 positive cases in the Derry City and Strabane District Council area, a fall of 32 on numbers given last Friday for Thursday.

Over the past seven days there have been a further 465 COVID-19 cases in the Derry and Strabane area.

This means that since the pandemic started in March there have now been 27,393 positive cases within the council boundary.

The rate of infection within the Derry and Strabane Council area has risen slightly to 307.4 cases per 100,000 – still the lowest rate of all 11 councils in the North.

The Department has recorded a total of 178 Coronavirus deaths within the Derry and Strabane council area to date – the lowest out of all councils here.

Bed occupancy across all hospitals is now at 105 per cent.

There are currently 326 patients in hospitals across the North with Coronavirus.

There are 36 patients being treated in intensive care with 28 patients on ventilators.

The Western Trust reports that 10.64 per cent of beds in Altnagelvin Hospital are COVID-19 occupied with staff treating 34 patients with Coronavirus.

Five of these patients are currently being treated in Altnagelvin’s ICU for COVID-19.

The hospital is currently running at 4.76 per cent over capacity with beds.

A total of 48 care homes are now dealing with a Coronavirus outbreak with a further 930 concluded Coronavirus outbreaks in care homes.

A total of ten out of 69 residential care homes in the Western Trust area are still dealing with a Coronavirus outbreak.

To date, a total of 2,663,473 Coronavirus vaccines have been administered in the North.
