One further death, 1,471 new cases in North

THE Department of Health has reported further 1,471 new Coronavirus cases in the North of Ireland in the past 24 hours.

That’s a rise of 193 new cases on figures given yesterday for Monday.

There have been one further death (none outside the current reporting period), bringing the Department of Health’s total number of deaths from the virus (mostly in hospital settings) to 2,600.

None of these latest deaths was recorded in the Derry City and Strabane District Council area since figures were released on Friday on the Department’s dashboard.

In the past week, the Department has recorded 8,969 new cases of Coronavirus.

There has been a further 87 positive cases in the Derry City and Strabane District Council area, a rise of 13 on numbers given on yesterday for Monday.

Over the past seven days there have been a further 578 COVID-19 cases in the Derry and Strabane area.

This means that since the pandemic started in March there have now been 26,111 positive cases within the council boundary.

The rate of infection within the Derry and Strabane Council area has fallen to 382.1 cases per 100,000 – still the lowest rate of all 11 councils in the North.

The Department has recorded a total of 171 Coronavirus deaths within the Derry and Strabane council area to date – the third lowest out of all councils here.

Bed occupancy across all hospitals has risen to 104 per cent.

There are currently 347 patients in hospitals across the North with Coronavirus.

There are 33 patients being treated in intensive care with 26 patients on ventilators.

The Western Trust reports that 10.06 per cent of beds in Altnagelvin Hospital are COVID-19 occupied with staff treating 32 patients with Coronavirus.

Two of these patients are currently being treated in Altnagelvin’s ICU for COVID-19.

The hospital is currently running at 10.34 per cent over capacity with beds.

A total of 65 care homes are now dealing with a Coronavirus outbreak with a further 881 concluded Coronavirus outbreaks in care homes.

A total of ten out of 69 residential care homes in the Western Trust area are still dealing with a Coronavirus outbreak.

To date, a total of 2,561,250 vaccines have been administered in the North.
