Six more deaths, 1,278 new cases in North

THE Department of Health has announced further 1,278 new Coronavirus cases in the North of Ireland in the past 24 hours.

That’s a rise of 169 new cases on figures given yesterday for Sunday.

There have been a further six deaths (one outside the current reporting period), bringing the Department of Health’s total number of deaths from the virus (mostly in hospital settings) to 2,599.

None of these latest deaths was recorded in the Derry City and Strabane District Council area since figures were released on Friday on the Department’s dashboard.

In the past week, the Department has recorded 8,802 new cases of Coronavirus.

There has been a further 74 positive cases in the Derry City and Strabane District Council area, a small rise of one on numbers given on yesterday for Sunday.

Over the past seven days there have been a further 597 COVID-19 cases in the Derry and Strabane area.

This means that since the pandemic started in March there have now been 26,024 positive cases within the council boundary.

The rate of infection within the Derry and Strabane Council area has fallen to 394.6 cases per 100,000 – the lowest rate of all 11 councils in the North.

The Department has now recorded a total of 171 Coronavirus deaths within the Derry and Strabane council area to date – the third lowest out of all councils here.

Bed occupancy across all hospitals remains at 103 per cent.

There are currently 368 patients in hospitals across the North with Coronavirus.

There are 31 patients being treated in intensive care with 21 patients on ventilators.

The Western Trust reports that 10.06 per cent of beds in Altnagelvin Hospital are COVID-19 occupied with staff treating 35 patients with Coronavirus.

One of these patients is currently being treated in Altnagelvin’s ICU for COVID-19.

The hospital is currently running at 8.05 per cent over capacity with beds.

A total of 69 care homes are now dealing with a Coronavirus outbreak with a further 878 concluded Coronavirus outbreaks in care homes.

A total of ten out of 69 residential care homes in the Western Trust area are still dealing with a Coronavirus outbreak.

To date, a total of 2,556,457 vaccines have been administered in the North.
